Why a fence run rounds up, not down
A panel fence system is built from fixed-width sections that cannot be shortened without specialized cutting and refastening hardware that most panel systems are not designed to support cleanly. That means your run length divided by a single panel's width almost never comes out to a whole number, and the practical answer is always to round up to the next full panel, accepting that the last panel in a run is often shortened at installation or that the layout is adjusted slightly to distribute that difference across the run. This plan performs that rounding explicitly rather than reporting a fractional panel count that cannot actually be purchased.
Gate openings are subtracted from the total run length before the panel count is calculated, since a gate occupies its own dedicated opening rather than being built from standard fence panels.
The post count shown is a starting point
A baseline post count assumes a single straight, uninterrupted run with a standard post at every panel joint. Real fence lines are rarely that simple: a corner needs a post rated for the additional load from two directions, a gate needs posts specifically sized and set for the gate's weight and hardware, and an end post against an existing structure may not need a freestanding post at all. Each of those situations changes the baseline count this plan produces, and they need to be added or adjusted based on your fence's actual layout, not assumed away.
Sloped ground adds its own layout complication
A fence run across sloped ground is typically built either stepped, with each panel level and a visible step down between panels, or raked, with the whole panel angled to follow the slope continuously. Stepped panels are usually standard stock; raked panels often require a different, sometimes custom-order panel or on-site modification. This plan assumes a level run; if your fence crosses any meaningful slope, confirm with your supplier which panel style your run needs before ordering standard stock panels sized for level ground.
What this plan does not determine
Post depth, footing size, and concrete requirements depend on your fence height, wind exposure, and local soil conditions, and in many areas a fence over a certain height or near a property line triggers a permit or setback requirement. This plan calculates material quantities for a layout you have already worked out; it does not determine whether that layout is structurally adequate or compliant with a local requirement. Confirm both before digging a single post hole.
