Exterior project planning
Deck surfaces, patios, ground cover, fencing, and garden structures, within a nonstructural planning scope. 28 tools, searchable below.
Paint
Purchase, primer, ceiling, cabinet, and porch-floor coating plans.
Deck
Deck surface boards, railing material, and lighting layout.
Deck board length comparison
Compare two deck board stock lengths on the same deck surface to see which produces the lower modeled total cost.
Deck lighting layout plan
Compare two low-voltage lighting kit sizes for a deck rail or stair run and see the kit count and cost each one produces.
Deck railing material plan
Turn a verified railing run and a system's section width into a section and post count for your deck railing.
Deck surface board plan
Turn a verified deck surface's dimensions, board width, gap, and stock length into a board and clip count.
Ground cover
Mulch, gravel, and landscape fabric coverage.
Gravel cover plan
Turn an area, a target depth, and a yield figure into how many bags or cubic yards of gravel to order.
Landscape fabric plan
Turn a bed's dimensions, a fabric roll's width and overlap, and stake spacing into a complete fabric order.
Mulch cover plan
Turn a garden bed's dimensions and a target mulch depth into how many bags or cubic yards to order.
Fence
Fence panel, picket, chain-link, gate, and finish planning.
Chain-link material plan
Turn a fence run, fabric roll length, and terminal point count into a chain-link fabric, line post, and terminal post order.
Fence finish plan
Turn a fence's run length, height, and a finish product's coverage into how many gallons of paint or stain to buy.
Fence gate opening plan
See how a gate opening changes a fence run's panel and post count, plus the dedicated gate posts it needs.
Fence material-system comparison
Compare a panel fence system against a picket fence system on the same run, using each system's own real quantities and prices.
Fence panel layout plan
Turn a fence run's length, gate openings, and panel width into a panel and post count for a straight run.
Picket fence material plan
Turn a fence run, picket width and gap, and post spacing into a complete picket, rail, and post material plan.
Privacy screen panel plan
Turn a screen run's length and a panel's width and gap into the number of privacy screen panels and posts to buy.
Patio
Paver purchase, base material, and edging plans.
Patio base-material plan
Turn a patio's verified area and base depth into the base material volume and package count to order.
Patio edging plan
Turn a patio's perimeter and an edging product's stock length into the number of edging pieces and stakes to buy.
Patio paver purchase plan
Compare two paver products on the same patio area, using each one's coverage per package and price to find the lower modeled cost.
Storage
Shelving, closet, pantry, garage, and bookcase planning.
Garden
Raised beds, planter boxes, stepping stones, and timber borders.
Garden path stepping-stone plan
Compare two stepping-stone stride spacings for a garden path and see the stone count and cost each one produces.
Landscape timber border plan
Turn a garden bed's perimeter and corner count into a waste-adjusted timber and stake purchase plan, with a modeled total cost.
Planter box material plan
Turn a planter box's verified dimensions into a lumber, liner, and fastener buy list.
Potting soil plan
Turn a planter or pot's footprint and fill depth into a waste-adjusted potting soil bag count, with a modeled total cost.
Raised bed material plan
Turn a raised bed's dimensions and verified fill depth into a board and fill-soil buy list.
Furnishings
Rug fit and patio furnishing layout.
Outdoor
Pergola shade, string lighting, and rain barrel comparisons.
Pergola shade fabric plan
Turn a pergola opening's dimensions and fabric width into a roll count and fastener purchase for a shade fabric installation, with a modeled total cost.
Rain barrel capacity comparison
Compare two rain barrel sizes against your roof-catchment estimate and see how many of each size you would need and what each option costs.
String-light length plan
Turn a run length and a drop-pattern allowance into a string light strand and extension-cord purchase plan, with a modeled total cost.
What an exterior planning decision usually involves
Exterior surface and boundary projects tend to add one layer of planning that interior work does not: a base or foundation material, a run-and-bay layout, or a depth-dependent volume, on top of the same purchase-quantity and comparison questions that apply indoors. A patio needs a paver quantity and a separate base material calculation. A fence needs a run length converted into bays, posts, and gate openings before any material count makes sense. A raised bed needs both a lumber cut list and a fill volume. The specific geometry differs by project type, but each one still reduces to a measured area or run, a waste allowance, and a purchase-unit conversion.
Comparisons matter here as much as they do indoors: two decking products, two paver patterns, or two fence panel systems can produce meaningfully different material counts and costs from the same footprint, and the honest comparison has to hold waste, package rounding, and scope constant across both options rather than comparing a rough estimate for one against a precise one for the other.
Where this scope stops
Nonstructural planning only
Exterior planning on this site covers material quantities for surfaces, ground cover, and boundary structures from dimensions, product specifications, and construction requirements you have independently verified. It does not calculate structural members, footings, retaining systems, or anything load-bearing, and it does not determine drainage, base preparation, compaction, local permit requirements, or property-line placement. Those facts come from a manufacturer's instructions, a local requirement, or a qualified professional's review of your site, never from a measurement-based planning tool.
For the ideas that apply across most exterior planning decisions, measurement method, waste and package rounding, and reading a product label, see Resources. For turning a set of exterior material quantities into a full project budget or a phased plan, see project planning.
