A gate changes the whole run's math, not just its own spot

It is tempting to think of a gate as simply subtracting its width from the total run and leaving everything else the same, but removing a chunk from the middle or end of a run changes exactly where the remaining panels have to land, which can change how many whole panels that remaining length actually needs. This plan calculates the panel count both with and without the gate opening removed, so you can see directly whether the gate's placement happens to change the total panel count, not just add a gate-shaped gap to an otherwise unaffected layout.

That comparison matters because it is easy to order panels based on the full run length and only subtract the gate cost afterward, which can leave you either short a panel or holding an extra one once the actual gate-adjusted layout is built.

Why gate posts are priced and specified differently

A standard line post in a fence run only needs to resist lateral loads from wind and the fence panels themselves. A gate post additionally carries the swinging weight of the gate itself, off-center on hinges, which is a meaningfully different structural load. Gate posts are typically larger, set deeper, and sometimes reinforced with concrete in a way standard posts are not, and manufacturers usually sell a distinct, more expensive gate post specifically rated for that job. This plan prices gate posts separately from standard posts for exactly that reason, so the two are never accidentally treated as interchangeable in a budget.

Swing clearance is a site check, not a quantity

A gate needs clear space to swing open on at least one side, and that clearance requirement depends on your actual site layout, walkway placement, and which direction the gate is meant to open, none of which a run-length calculation can evaluate. Confirm swing clearance and the gate's intended opening direction against your actual site before finalizing hardware, since a material plan that is otherwise correct is still unusable if the gate cannot physically open where it is placed.
