Fill volume grows faster than people expect

A raised bed's frame cost scales with its perimeter, a linear measurement, but its fill cost scales with volume, which grows with both area and depth at once. Doubling a bed's depth from six inches to twelve does not add a modest amount to the fill order, it doubles it, and for a bed of any real size that difference in soil-blend cost can easily exceed the frame's entire material cost. This plan calculates fill separately from the frame specifically so that volume effect is visible on its own rather than buried in a single combined total.

The frame calculation treats your bed as a simple rectangle and converts its perimeter into whole stock-length boards with a waste allowance for corner cuts. The fill calculation multiplies your bed's floor area by your verified fill depth to get a volume, then converts that to whole purchase units using your chosen soil blend's yield.

Soil blend choice affects both cost and plant results

A raised bed fill is rarely plain topsoil; most gardeners use a blend of topsoil, compost, and sometimes a lighter bulking material to balance drainage, nutrition, and cost. Bagged blends are convenient for smaller beds, while bulk delivery of a garden-specific blend is usually more economical once a bed's volume crosses roughly a cubic yard, similar to the crossover point for mulch or gravel. Existing soil beneath the bed is not always accounted for

This plan calculates fill for the bed's full specified depth using one blend and one price; if you are using a layered fill strategy, run this calculation once per layer with each layer's own depth and material cost rather than treating the whole depth as one uniform product.

Depth needed depends on what you are growing

Shallow-rooted plants need meaningfully less fill depth than deep-rooted vegetables, and entering a generic depth figure without considering your actual plants risks either overordering fill or underserving your plants' root systems.
