Why a small box still needs a full material breakdown

A planter box looks simple, but its material list actually spans three different kinds of measurement. The frame itself is a linear-stock problem: how much total board length the box's sides and corners need, converted into whole stock-length pieces. The liner, if used, is an area problem: the box's interior surface converted into whole liner rolls. Fasteners are neither, since a box this size typically uses a small, countable number of fastener packs rather than a calculated quantity. This plan handles all three from the same box dimensions, so a small project does not require three separate manual calculations.

The board total comes from your box's perimeter plus the extra length needed for corner posts running the full height, with a modest waste allowance for cuts. The liner total comes from the box's interior floor and wall area divided by your chosen liner product's roll coverage.

Why liner matters more than it looks like it should

A liner between soil and untreated wood meaningfully slows the wood's decay from constant moisture contact, extending a planter box's usable life well beyond an unlined box of the same material. Skipping liner to save a small cost often means replacing the box's boards sooner, which is a larger cost than the liner itself. If your board material is not naturally rot-resistant, treat liner as a low-cost extension of the box's lifespan rather than an optional extra.

Corner joinery affects the actual board count

How a box's corners are joined changes how much extra length each side effectively needs beyond the raw perimeter. A simple butt joint at each corner needs the least extra length, while a lap or mitered corner can consume additional material at each of the four corners for a cleaner look. This plan's linear-length calculation assumes a straightforward butt-jointed frame; if you are planning a more decorative corner treatment, add extra length per corner to the total before running this plan, since that detail is a design choice this calculation does not infer on its own.

Food safety for edible gardening

If this planter will grow food, confirm both the board material and any liner or fastener coating are rated safe for edible use, since some pressure-treated lumber and certain metal fastener coatings are not recommended for direct food-crop contact. This plan calculates quantities for whatever materials you specify; it does not evaluate whether those specific materials are appropriate for growing food, which is a safety check worth doing before finalizing a product choice.
