Why chain-link has two different kinds of post
Chain-link fencing draws a sharper line between post types than most other fence systems. Line posts, spaced along a straight run, only resist the fabric's tension pulling in one direction and can be lighter and cheaper as a result. Terminal posts, at every corner, end, and gate location, resist tension pulling from more than one direction or anchor the fabric's end entirely, and are correspondingly larger and more expensive. Treating every post as the same post is one of the most common ways a chain-link estimate comes in wrong, which is why this plan prices line posts and terminal posts as separate line items rather than one blended post count.
Fabric is calculated separately again, since it is sold in fixed roll lengths and rolled out continuously along the run rather than divided into discrete bays the way posts are. This plan converts your net run length into a whole number of fabric rolls using a small waste allowance for overlap and end trimming.
Counting terminal points correctly
Terminal point count is not automatically derivable from a run length and gate width alone, since it depends on your fence's actual shape: a straight single run has two end terminals, an L-shaped run adds a corner terminal, and every gate adds two more terminal posts, one on each side of the opening. This plan asks you to enter that count directly rather than guessing at it from geometry, since an incorrect guess here would understate exactly the more expensive component of the whole order.
Fabric height and gauge are separate product decisions
Chain-link fabric is sold by height and by wire gauge, and both affect price independently of the roll length this plan calculates. A taller fabric height covers more vertical distance per roll but costs more per roll, and a heavier gauge wire resists bending and cutting better at a higher price point. Confirm the height and gauge appropriate for your project, whether that is a basic yard boundary or a more security-focused installation, before pricing rolls, since two rolls of the same length but different height or gauge are not interchangeable in either price or purpose.
Hardware beyond fabric and posts
A complete chain-link installation also needs top rail or tension wire along the top edge, tension bands and bars at terminal posts, and tie wire or clips to secure the fabric to line posts at regular intervals, none of which is included in this plan's fabric-and-post totals. Confirm your specific system's hardware requirements from the manufacturer before treating this plan as a complete shopping list rather than its three largest components.
