Why subfloor condition matters more here than for other flooring
A peel-and-stick product's bond depends entirely on direct adhesive contact with a clean, flat, dry subfloor, unlike a floating floor that rests on top of an underlayment or a nailed floor that is mechanically fastened regardless of minor surface imperfections. A subfloor with dust, old adhesive residue, or flatness outside the manufacturer's tolerance will produce a weaker bond, more visible seams, and a shorter effective lifespan, regardless of how accurately the pack quantity below is calculated.
The quantity math itself is standard: your room's net area, adjusted for waste, divided by your specific product's pack coverage, rounded up to a whole pack. The waste allowance covers cuts along walls and around any obstacles in the room.
Temperature affects installation, not just adhesion quality
Most peel-and-stick products specify a minimum room and material temperature for installation, since the adhesive's initial tack and long-term bond strength both depend on being applied within that range. Installing in a cold room, or with material that has been stored somewhere cold, can produce a weaker bond even on an otherwise well-prepared subfloor. Bring material to room temperature and confirm the space itself meets the manufacturer's stated range before starting, regardless of season.
Removal difficulty depends on how long it stays down
Most peel-and-stick products are marketed as easier to remove than a fully bonded floor, but that ease typically declines the longer the flooring stays in place, as adhesive continues curing against the subfloor over months and years. If this is intended as a temporary or rental-friendly solution, confirm your specific product's removability guidance rather than assuming every peel-and-stick product behaves the same way after a year or more of use.
Moisture below the subfloor is a separate check
A concrete subfloor, particularly at or below grade, can have moisture moving up through it that is not visible to the eye but is enough to compromise adhesive flooring over time. Manufacturers typically specify a moisture testing method and an acceptable threshold before their product is used over concrete. This plan calculates purchase quantity only; confirm your subfloor's moisture condition against the manufacturer's specific requirement before installing over a concrete slab.
