Why shelf count multiplies the whole calculation
Each shelf at the same opening width needs its own length of stock, so a closet getting three shelves needs three times the linear shelf material a single shelf would, not just a single width calculation applied once. This plan multiplies your opening width by your shelf count before running the standard linear-stock calculation, so the total board count already reflects every shelf in the closet, not just one.
Supports follow a similar multiplication: the number you specify per shelf, typically two or more depending on shelf length and expected load, is multiplied by how many shelves the closet is getting. A closet with several shelves accumulates support hardware quickly, which is easy to underestimate if you calculate one shelf's supports and forget to multiply by the total shelf count.
Support count depends on load, not just shelf length
A shelf carrying folded linens needs less support than one intended for storage bins or heavier items, and a longer shelf sags more under the same load than a shorter one unless it has additional mid-span support. This plan uses the support count you specify per shelf rather than calculating one from length and load, since the correct spacing depends on your shelf material's actual stiffness and your intended use, both of which vary by project.
Not every shelf in the closet needs the same width
Many closets mix a full-width top shelf with a narrower shelf section elsewhere, or add a single shelf above a hanging rod that does not span the full opening. This plan assumes every shelf shares the same opening width; if your project mixes shelf widths, calculate each distinct width group separately and combine the results, rather than averaging widths together in a way that would misstate the true board and support counts for either group.
Wall type changes what "support" actually means
A support anchored directly into wall framing can carry meaningfully more weight than the same support relying on a drywall anchor in open wall space between studs. Confirm your support locations land on framing where possible, or use anchors explicitly rated for your expected shelf load if framing is not available at your planned support locations, since this plan calculates a support count, not the fastening method each one needs.
