Baseboard is bought by the stock piece, not by the linear foot alone, so the real question is how many full-length pieces your room's actual run requires. Enter your perimeter, openings, and stock length to find out.
Perimeter is a starting point, not the answer
A room's total wall perimeter overstates how much baseboard it actually needs, because doorways and other floor-level openings do not get baseboard across them. Subtracting that opening width from the raw perimeter gives the net run of baseboard the room actually requires, and that net figure is what should drive a purchase, not the room's full perimeter measurement.
From that net run, a waste allowance accounts for the material lost to angled cuts at corners, small mistakes, and the reality that a room's corners rarely divide evenly into whole stock lengths. The adjusted length is then divided by your stock's length per piece and rounded up, since a retailer will not sell a fractional piece and a slightly-too-short piece cannot be stretched to finish a run.
Why corner style changes real material use
Inside corners are usually coped, meaning one piece is cut to fit against the profile of the piece it meets, which uses close to the full length of both pieces. Outside corners are typically mitered at 45 degrees, which wastes a small triangular offcut on each piece at that corner. A room with several outside corners, common on an L-shaped room or a room with a bump-out, consumes more material per foot of net run than a simple rectangular room does, even at the identical waste percentage entered above. If your room has multiple outside corners, consider raising the waste allowance slightly above what a simple rectangular room would need.
Matching existing trim
If this purchase is meant to match trim already installed elsewhere in the home, verify the exact profile and height before ordering, since baseboard profiles are not universally standardized between manufacturers and even between product lines from the same manufacturer. A mismatched profile is often more visually obvious than a slightly different paint color would be, and it is not something a stock-length and waste calculation can catch on its own.
Buying a small buffer beyond the exact count
Even a careful waste allowance does not fully protect against a single miscut piece, an unexpected wall irregularity, or a length of stock that arrives with a visible defect near one end. Baseboard is inexpensive relative to flooring or cabinetry, and the cost of one extra stock piece is usually small compared with the cost of a second trip to buy a single piece from the same product run. If this purchase is time- sensitive, ordering one piece beyond the calculated count is a reasonable buffer rather than an overcorrection.
Verify before you buy
- Confirm the actual stock length this product is sold in, since baseboard profiles vary between 8, 12, and 16 ft lengths.
- Check whether inside and outside corners on your room need coped or mitered joints, which changes how much of each piece is usable.
- Verify the profile and height match your existing trim if this is a partial-room match rather than a full replacement.
