Coverage target, not wall area, drives the panel count

Unlike drywall or paint, acoustic panels are not meant to cover a wall's entire surface; treating a percentage of the wall is usually enough to meaningfully change how a room sounds, and full coverage is often unnecessary and expensive overkill. This plan starts from a coverage target you set as a percentage of the treatable wall area, then calculates how many panels of a given size are needed to hit that target, rounding up since a partial panel is not a purchasable unit.

Coverage percentage is not the same as acoustic performance

A panel's actual sound-absorbing performance is described by its noise reduction coefficient, a rating independent of the panel's physical size, and two panels covering the identical wall area can perform very differently depending on their thickness, material, and mounting method. Identify which problem you are actually solving before choosing a coverage target, since the "right" percentage varies considerably by use case rather than following one universal rule.
