Why seam length is its own measurement, not a byproduct of area

Two rooms with identical square footage can need very different amounts of tape and compound depending on how their drywall sheets were oriented and cut. A layout using fewer, larger sheets produces less total seam length than one using many smaller sheets or an inefficient cutting pattern, even on the exact same wall area. This plan deliberately asks for your seam length as its own measured or estimated input, taken from the actual sheet layout, rather than deriving it from room area with an assumption that would not hold across different layouts.

Tape is calculated as a straightforward linear-stock problem: your seam length divided by a tape roll's length, rounded up. Compound is calculated from your seam length multiplied by how many coats you plan, since each additional coat requires compound across the full seam length again, then divided by your product's coverage yield per bucket.

Coat count is where compound quantity actually comes from

A typical finish uses three coats: an embedding coat that sets the tape, a second coat that widens and smooths the joint, and a final skim coat for a seamless appearance. Each coat covers the same seam length again, which is why compound quantity scales directly with coat count in this calculation. A project using only two coats for a utility space, or four for a very high-visibility wall, should adjust the coat count accordingly rather than assuming three is universal.

Corner bead adds its own seam length to track

Outside corners typically use a metal or plastic corner bead rather than paper tape, and while the compound calculation treats all seam length the same, corner bead itself is a separate linear-stock item with its own stock length and price, similar to the tape calculation above but for a different product. If your project includes outside corners, run the same linear-stock approach separately for corner bead using its own stock length, rather than assuming the tape total already covers it.

A skim coat over the whole surface is a different calculation

Some finish levels call for a thin skim coat of compound across the entire drywall surface, not just the seams, to achieve a perfectly smooth, texture-free wall. That use consumes compound at a rate closer to a coating job over the full area than a seam-only calculation, and this plan's seam-length-based math understates compound needs for that scenario. If a full skim coat is part of your finish plan, estimate compound separately for that step rather than relying on this seam-only total.
