Coverage figures are tied to a specific product, not a category

Two insulation products with the same nominal R-value can have different package coverage if their thickness, density, or batt dimensions differ, and a product with a higher R-value for the same cavity depth generally covers less area per package because it packs more insulating material into the same physical package size. This plan takes the coverage figure from your specific chosen product's label rather than assuming a category-wide average, since that figure is the one number most likely to make an insulation estimate wrong if guessed rather than looked up.

From your verified cavity area, a modest waste allowance, and that coverage figure, the plan calculates a whole number of packages to buy, along with the leftover coverage that rounding up produces.

Why cavity area, not wall area, is the right number

A stud wall's insulation goes between framing members, not across the wall's full surface, so the true area to insulate is somewhat less than the wall's total surface area once stud, plate, and header framing is subtracted. This plan asks for your verified cavity area specifically so that framing is already accounted for in the number you enter, rather than silently assuming a fixed framing percentage that may not match your actual wall's stud spacing and header locations.

Batts, blown-in, and rigid board are not interchangeable quantities

This plan's package-and-coverage approach fits batt insulation and similar packaged products cleanly, but blown-in insulation is typically ordered by bag with a depth-and-density-dependent coverage chart of its own, and rigid foam board is sized and priced by the sheet like drywall. If your project uses blown-in or rigid board insulation instead of batts, look up that product's own coverage figures from its manufacturer rather than reusing a batt-style coverage number, since the underlying math shape may differ even though the packages-from-area principle stays the same.

R-value and vapor barrier requirements are local decisions

The correct R-value for a wall assembly depends on your climate zone and, in most places, an energy code requirement, and whether a vapor barrier is needed depends on both climate and wall assembly design. Getting either wrong can affect both energy performance and moisture management inside the wall over time. This plan calculates quantity for whatever R-value product you specify; it does not determine whether that R-value or vapor barrier approach is correct for your specific climate and wall design.
