Why fullness, not window width, drives the panel count

Curtains are meant to hang with visible folds and gathers, not stretched perfectly flat across a rod, and achieving that look requires more total fabric width than the rod itself measures. A fullness target of two, a common starting point, means the combined width of all panels on a rod should be roughly twice the rod's own width. This plan multiplies your rod width by your chosen fullness target to get the required total panel width, then divides by a single panel's width to find how many panels that requires, rounded up to a whole panel.

Using the window opening's width instead of the rod's actual mounted width is a common mistake, since curtain rods are typically mounted wider than the window opening itself to let curtains stack fully open beside the window rather than covering part of the glass when open. Measure and use the rod's actual width, not the window frame's width.

Fullness needs vary by fabric weight

A heavier fabric, such as a blackout or velvet curtain, often looks and hangs well at a lower fullness ratio than a light, sheer fabric, which typically needs more fullness to avoid looking flat and thin. If your fabric choice is on the heavier or lighter end of typical curtain weights, check the manufacturer's or a design reference's recommended fullness for that specific fabric type rather than defaulting to a single ratio for every material.

Multiple windows on one rod change the calculation

A single continuous rod spanning more than one window, common for a row of windows treated as one visual unit, needs its total width measured as one figure rather than calculated per window and added together, since the fullness target applies to the combined span rather than to each window segment individually. Measure the full rod span in that case and run this plan once against that combined width, rather than running it separately per window and summing the results.

Panel length is a separate decision from panel count

This plan calculates how many panels of a given width you need; it does not address panel length, which depends on where you want the curtain to break, at the windowsill, the floor, or intentionally pooling slightly on the floor. Confirm your desired length and mounting height before ordering, since a panel count is only half of a complete curtain order.
