Why corners drive crown molding waste more than for baseboard
Crown molding sits at a compound angle against both the wall and the ceiling at once, which means every corner cut involves two angles instead of one flat miter. That compound cut is less forgiving of small measurement or angle errors, and a botched cut typically wastes the remainder of that piece rather than leaving a usable offcut for elsewhere in the room. A room with the same perimeter but more corners, such as an L-shaped room compared with a simple rectangle, realistically consumes more crown stock even though the straight-line footage covered is identical.

Mixing profiles with different spring angles, or assuming a generic 45-degree miter works for every product, is a common and costly mistake that no quantity calculator can catch from a perimeter and stock length alone. Confirm your specific product's spring angle and any manufacturer-provided cut charts before cutting a single piece.
Vaulted and sloped ceilings need special handling
A vaulted or sloped ceiling section changes how crown transitions from a level run to a raked one, often requiring a specialized transition piece or a site-cut compound angle that a standard piece count does not account for. If your room includes a sloped ceiling section, treat that section separately from the rest of the perimeter and verify the manufacturer's specific guidance for raked crown before finalizing your order.
Material choice changes cut tolerance
Solid wood, MDF, and polyurethane crown profiles behave differently under a miter saw and tolerate small angle errors differently. Polyurethane and MDF profiles are generally more forgiving of a slightly imperfect angle since caulk and paint can disguise a small gap, while a stained solid-wood profile shows every gap at a joint far more readily. If you are working with stained wood, consider a somewhat higher waste allowance than this tool's default to account for the extra practice cuts a clean joint in that material typically requires.
